TYPES OF MAPS

 A map is a visual representation of an entire area or a part of an area, typically represented on a flat surface. Its main purpose is to show specific and relative sizes, positions, and distances of features within a given space.

General Reference Maps:

These maps show the geographic location of features without focusing on a single specific statistical variable.

Political Maps: Highlight human-made administrative boundaries, such as country borders, state lines, and major cities.

Physical Maps: Illustrate natural landscape features like mountains, rivers, lakes, and elevation changes using color gradients (e.g., green for low elevation, brown for high elevation).

Topographic Maps: Use contour lines (isohypses) to represent 3D terrain elevation and slope steepness on a 2D surface.

Thematic Maps:

Thematic maps focus on a specific theme, subject, or spatial data distribution across a geographic area.

Choropleth Maps: Use varying color shades or patterns to represent statistical variables per area (e.g., population density, GDP per capita, literacy rates).

Dot Density Maps: Place individual dots to represent a specific quantitative value of a feature across space (e.g., crop distribution, disease outbreaks).

Isopleth / Isarithmic Maps: Use continuous lines connecting points of equal value across a region (e.g., isobars for atmospheric pressure, isotherms for temperature).

Cartograms: Distort real geographic shape and area intentionally to convey a specific variable (e.g., resizing country shapes based on total population).

Specialized & Navigational Maps

Designed for precise navigation, planning, or technical measurement.

Cadastral Maps: High-precision, large-scale maps defining legal land ownership, property boundaries, and parcel plot lines for municipal planning and tax records.

Nautical & Aeronautical Charts: Specialized navigational maps showing water depths, coastlines, navigation hazards, airspace sectors, and flight paths.

Road / Transit Maps: Focus on transport networks, showing highways, streets, subways, and rail lines to assist route planning.

Maps Classified by Scale

Categorized purely by the ratio of map distance to real ground distance (\text{Scale} = \frac{\text{Map Distance}}{\text{Ground Distance}}).

Large-Scale (\ge 1:50,000): Small area, high detail.

Cadastral Maps: Property boundaries and legal land ownership. City Plans: Neighborhood street layouts and buildings.

Medium-Scale (1:50,000 to 1:250,000): Moderate area, balanced detail.Regional/District Topo Sheets: District terrain, forests, and main roads.

Small-Scale (\le 1:250,000): Huge area, low detail.Atlas & Wall Maps: Broad country borders, continents, and world overviews.
